  Animals + Writing conference, Sydney
A celebration of animals within worlds of writing
Sunday 7 July 2013
University of Sydney
Organiser: Australian Animal Studies Group (AASG)

Animals + Writing is a one-day conference celebrating animals within worlds of writing. It is an opportunity to recognize, reflect on and discuss the influence of animals on writers' practices within literary and academic contexts.

Questions framing this event include:
  • How do animals influence writers' practices?
  • How are writers redressing inadequate representations of non-human animals and human-animal relations through their practices?
  • When are animals most present in writing and are they always more than symbols?
Animals + Writing foregrounds recent developments in the representation of animals' subjectivity and agency in writing, paying particular attention to the ethics of human and non-human animal interactions and relationships. It seeks to link concerns with the ethics and aesthetics of human-animal relations, to foster dialogue and to initiate animal focussed writing endeavours.

For more details see http://www.animalspluswriting.com/.

Australian Animals Studies Group Conference, Sydney

Monday 8 to Wednesday 10 July 2013
University of Sydney
All day catering will be vegan.
Organiser: Australian Animal Studies Group (AASG)

The Anthropocene describes a period of geological time dominated by homo sapiens and marked by the significant impact of human activity on the planet. At a time when the natural world is ever more subject to human intervention, interspecies relations face many challenges. If the cultural and scientific moment of the Anthropocene puts 'us' in our place, then it is time to reconsider our place with them, the other animals.

This 5th Conference of the Australian Animal Studies Group will bring together voices from a wide range of disciplines and beyond the academy to examine how new knowledge of human-animal relations requires novel starting points, critical tools and cross-disciplinary connections.

Keynote speakers:
  • Prof Cary Wolfe
  • Prof Paul McGreevy
  • Dr Siobhan O'Sullivan
  • Assoc Prof Kate Rigby
  • Prof Peter Sankoff
  • Assoc Prof Claire Kim

The evening will be comprised of all forms of art including a choir of 20 people, poetry reading by acclaimed poet and novelist David Brooks, dancing to be choreographed by world renowned Dale Pope choreographer and her dancers, short films and other performance art.   Living Green Festival, Canberra
Sunday 13 October 2013
(the last Sunday of Floriade)
Albert Hall, Commonwealth Ave, Canberra
100% vegan
Organiser: Living Green Festival

The Living Green Festival will promote a 'kinder shade of green'. The Festival will offer free entertainment, children's activities, cooking demonstrations, talks on a variety of environmental, animal protection and health issues, and a broad range of stalls offering low-emission, sustainable, locally made and cruelty-free food, products and services.
The festival aims to raise awareness in the ACT community of the environmental challenges we face and how the choices we make in our everyday lives impact on the environment, on other humans and on animals. Similar festivals have been held in other capital cities around Australia for several years, but only now is a festival focussing on the environmental consequences of all aspects of our modern day lives being held in the ACT.

Vegan Illawarra picnic at Kiama Produce Markets
12 noon Saturday 26 October 2013
Black Beach Park
Shoalhaven Street
Kiama
(in the area in front of the old primary school site)
Organiser: Vegan Illawarra

The Vegan Illawarra picnics are very popular. Catch up with old and new friends, share the markets, produce and recipes, as well as take in the beautiful view of Kiama Harbour.
Vegan Illawarra covers the area from Milton to Helensburgh, so this event is half way between.
Please bring a plate to share. Please bring a chair so we can move in under the shade. We are endeavouring to encourage our picnics to be raw.
If the weather is inclement, we will go uptown to a cafe.
The picnic coincides with the Kiama Produce Markets which go from 8am to 1pm. Local grown fruit and vegies, breads, etc..
Please email Rose at veganillawarra@gmail.com if you will be able to get there, and also pass this invitation on to others. If you can not find the group on the day, please call Rose on 0409 957 422.
