Vegan Illawarra picnic at Black Beach Park, Kiama 12 noon Saturday 28 January 2012 Black Beach Park Shoalhaven Street, Kiama (in the area in front of the old primary school site) Organiser: Vegan Illawarra Meet for a picnic, bring a plate to share with the Illawarra vegans. Vegan Illawarra covers the area from Milton to Helensburgh, so this event is half way between. If you are coming from Sydney, make a day of it by exploring the Royal National Park, driving over the Sea Cliff Bridge and maybe even going 'Wow!' at the Kiama blowhole. The picnic coincides with the Kiama Produce Markets which go from 8am to 1pm. They sell local grown fruit and vegies, breads, and lots of other goodies. Vegan shopping and Vietnamese dinner, Cabramatta Saturday 21 January 2012 4:30pm - for shopping tour of Just Green vegan organic health food shop 6pm - for dinner at Duy Linh vegan Vietnamese restaurant Just Green: Shop 20 70 John St (Belvedere Arcade) Cabramatta Duy Linh: Shop 10 117 John St, Cabramatta (enter from Hill St) Organiser: Vegan Society NSW This event will be hosted by Eve Nguyen, a registered naturopath, nutritionist and healthy cooking instructor. She is currently running an 8 week vegan nutrition class in Cabramatta. Before dinner, Eve will meet the group at a new vegan grocery store, Just Green, where she will talk about the different ingredients in Vietnamese cuisine and help everyone with ideas and their purchases. Just Green is five minutes walk from the restaurant. Duy Linh is one of the best places to eat in the west. Vegan Singles drinks at Kuleto's Cocktail Bar, Newtown 6pm Saturday 14 January 2012 157 King Street Newtown Organiser: Vegan Society NSW A night to inspire your love of vegans as well as animals. If you are a vegan or interested in becoming vegan and you are looking to make like-minded friends or meet someone special, then this is the night for you! Please note that not all participants are looking for a relationship, many are looking to find new vegan friends or just meet new people. Your host will make you feel at home in the relaxed atmosphere of Kuleto's Cocktail Bar. Tonight is completely open with no age or orientation labels. It is a chance for single vegans to mingle. It considers two very different concepts of the diet, and how they eventually merged to form Vegetarian Societies, but with the differences resulting in much confusion. It gives the origins, and original meaning, of the word vegetarian - and how it was originally what we now call vegan, in both diet and ethics. It is a detailed and challenging talk that you may find disconcerting as it encourages you to take a new look at some long held assumptions. John Davis was a pioneer of vegetarianism on the internet from the first days of the world wide web, maintaining websites for several major vegan, vegetarian and animal rights groups. John has a keen interest in researching the history of the International Vegetarian Union (IVU) and with general vegetarian history. John has attended IVU congresses and other events in many countries, including Brazil, California, China, Germany, India, Italy, Indonesia, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand. He lives in rural England. John is currently touring South East Asia after speaking at the 39th IVU World Vegetarian Congress in Indonesia. Manly Dam Park Circuit Track
Some steep sections, mostly easy walking.
11am - 4pm, Saturday 14 March 2009
Manly Dam was built in the late 19th century to supply the seaside town with water. Today it's well known to locals as a spot for kayaking, water skiiing, fishing and walking. Most visitors focus on Manly's harbour walks and overlook the dam, which is a shame. A good track around the lake runs for just over seven kilometres and, if there's been sufficient rain, passes small waterfalls along the way. The surrounding bushland boasts 300 species of plants, including huge gum trees, and 80 species of birds, among other wildlife such as turtles, possums, bandicoots and swamp wallabies.
Time: Start at 11am. Walk will be completely finished by 4pm. Total walking time: 3 hours.
Bring: Lunch and water
Cost: Free ($7 parking if coming by car)

Getting there: By car, enter the Manly Warringah War Memorial Park (the official name of Manly Dam) at King St and park inside the entrance. Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Beach
Easy to moderate, some stairs and hills involved.

Walk to Balmoral via Bradleys Head, Clifton Gardens, Georges Head and Middle Head. Magnificent scenery and some great history to explore.
Walk starts promptly at 11am and can be accessed by public or private transport and you can choose your own finishing time. Walk will be completely finished by 4pm.

Transport: Best way is ferry from Circular Quay at 10:40am
Bring: Lunch and water
Cost: Free
One of the most picturesque walks around Sydney Harbour takes you from Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Beach.
Along the way you will pass through national park and a number of sites of historical interest as well as taking in amazing views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and city centre all the way around to the heads.
The walk itself should take you around 2 hours with public transport available to take you back to the start.
Here is a good map of the walk produced by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.
The recommended itinerary is to start at Taronga Zoo Wharf which can be reached by bus or ferry. For the best bus route for you consult the very handy 131500.info website.
The first section winds around Bradleys Head, pass Taylors Bay, and over to the historic Clifton Gardens and Chowder Bay. This should take about 1 hour 40 minutes and you can rest here at the cafe and kiosk.
Highlights on the remainder of the walk to Balmoral include the view from Georges Head and Middle Head Road, and Balmoral itself.
Once you reach Balmoral you could have something to eat, take a swim to cool down, or just have a well-deserved rest on the beach.
Then you can either catch the 238 bus back from Raglan St back to Taronga Wharf or if you have the energy walk the alternative route back to Clifton Gardens and from there back to Taronga Wharf.

Vegan parents and kids group picnic in Parramatta Park

Come along to the first gathering of the vegan parents and kids group: a potluck picnic to be held in historic Parramatta Park.
Directions: Meet at the children's playground, in the north-western corner of Salters Field which is in the north-western part of Parramatta Park.
Playground is amongst trees on inside of bend in road.
Plenty of parking on side of road.
Note: this is not the same as Lake Parramatta.
Meet at the playground at 12:00 noon, then we'll decide where to camp for lunch. Depending on the number of people we will either have room at one of the picnic tables or lay out picnic blankets on the grass.

A great coastal walk where we can take in the world famous Sculpture By The Sea exhibition. Choose how far you want to walk, finish at either Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly or Coogee.

It is highly recommended that you come by public transport. If coming a distance, park at Bondi Junction and catch a bus down to Bondi Beach.
For return journey there are buses from Tamarama, Bronte and Coogee to Bondi Junction. I will have full bus information on the day.
We will meet at the corner of Notts Ave and Campbell Pde, Bondi Beach at 11am and leave on the walk at 11:15am.
Make sure you wear a hat, bring sun screen, water and food. There will be a booklet for sale on the sculptures at the start of the walk.
We will be as fast as the slowest walker, there are some steps but nothing too strenuous.

Discover Sydney walking with the Vegan Society NSW
North Head - some of the best views in Sydney. Easy walk
11am - 4pm, Saturday 27 September 2008
At North Head, discover what the military kept a secret for so long. See the Artillery School, the National Artillery Museum (North Fort) and some of the best views in Sydney.
Walk starts promptly at 11am and can be accessed by public or private transport and you can choose your own finishing time. Walk will be completely finished by 4pm.

Starting time: 11am
Meeting place: Gatehouse Visitors Centre at North Head Sanctuary off North Head Scenic Drive which is off Darley Rd Manly.
Public transport: Bus Route 135 from Manly Wharf, East Esplande, Stand A 10:10am arriving Quarantine Station 10:21am or 10:40am arriving 10:51am. Walk back up North Head Scenic Drive and follow signs to Gatehouse Visitor Centre.
Return buses about every 30 minutes 2pm, 2:27pm, 2:57pm, 3:27pm, 4pm, 4:27pm, 4:57pm
What to bring: Lunch, drink, cafe is at North Fort but don't know about vegan food. Wear a hat and walking shoes. Walk will still proceed if light rain, so bring appropriate gear or cancel by calling mobile. Storms or stong winds will cancel walk. Money if we do tour of the National Artillery Museum - $11 Adult, $8 Concession, $5 Child or go to the cafe.

The Vegan Society NSW is going out to Newtown to have dinner and to see the film Who Killed the Electric Car?. This documentary looks at the birth and death of the electric car, as well as the role of renewable energy and sustainable living in the future. The film explores the roles of automobile makers, the oil industry, the US government, batteries, hydrogen vehicles, and consumers in limiting the development and adoption of this technology. With Martin Sheen, Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson.
