Vegan Picnic, Mardi Gras Fair Day
12:30pm, Sunday 20 February 2011 Victoria Park, Broadway, Sydney (Note change of venue - was Botanic Gardens) We are teaming up with Queer Animal Liberation NSW so no one misses out on a great day at Fair Day and a great vegan picnic. Bring a vegan dish to share for a picnic at Mardi Gras Fair Day and enjoy free entertainment, on stage and off! Unfortunately we can't give you a specific spot or even vague area until the morning because it all depends where they set up the stage and the stalls, where the sun is, etc. A lot of the park will be in the sun so we'll definitely be near trees and shade, so that should narrow down the scope somewhat. Look out for the Vegan Society NSW banner! If you can't find us, call Samantha on 0403 658 858 or Greg on 0400 492 157 on the day. All welcome: vegan, vegetarian or just curious! Membership not required. A great chance to relax, have fun, enjoy yummy food and meet new friends. Please see the vegan picnic guidelines for more information. |

Dinner and talk by John Davis, International Vegetarian Union
How the First Vegans Invented Vegetarianism 6.30pm Saturday 16 October 2010 (talk starts at 7:30pm) Samadhi Earth Vegan Cafe 76a Wilford St, Newtown Talk is free, dinner at cafe prices This illustrated talk looks at how people in England, soon expanding to the USA, began to co-operate in promoting the vegetable diet. It considers two very different concepts of the diet, and how they eventually merged to form Vegetarian Societies, but with the differences resulting in much confusion. It gives the origins, and original meaning, of the word vegetarian - and how it was originally what we now call vegan, in both diet and ethics. It is a detailed and challenging talk that you may find disconcerting as it encourages you to take a new look at some long held assumptions. John Davis was a pioneer of vegetarianism on the internet from the first days of the world wide web, maintaining websites for several major vegan, vegetarian and animal rights groups. John has a keen interest in researching the history of the International Vegetarian Union (IVU) and with general vegetarian history. John has attended IVU congresses and other events in many countries, including Brazil, California, China, Germany, India, Italy, Indonesia, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand. He lives in rural England. John is currently touring South East Asia after speaking at the 39th IVU World Vegetarian Congress in Indonesia. Please RSVP by phone or SMS to 0402 849 218, by phone to 9343 0130, by email to events@vegansocietynsw.com or by leaving a message at the bottom of this page. |

Discover Sydney walking with the Vegan Society NSW
Manly Dam Park Circuit Track
Some steep sections, mostly easy walking.
11am - 4pm, Saturday 14 March 2009
Manly Dam was built in the late 19th century to supply the seaside
town with water. Today it's well known to locals as a spot for
kayaking, water skiiing, fishing and walking. Most visitors focus
on Manly's harbour walks and overlook the dam, which is a shame.
A good track around the lake runs for just over seven kilometres
and, if there's been sufficient rain, passes small waterfalls
along the way. The surrounding bushland boasts 300 species of
plants, including huge gum trees, and 80 species of birds, among
other wildlife such as turtles, possums, bandicoots and swamp
wallabies.
Time: Start at 11am. Walk will be completely
finished by 4pm. Total walking time: 3 hours.
Bring: Lunch and water
Cost: Free ($7 parking if coming by car)
Please RSVP: By email to Greg at
info@vegansocietynsw.com
or phone 0400 492 157. If you are unable to make it on the day,
please phone so we don't get worried!
Getting there: By car, enter the Manly Warringah
War Memorial Park (the official name of Manly Dam) at King St and
park inside the entrance. The closest bus stops at Condamine St,
Manly Vale and from there it is a 1.5km walk to the park entrance.
If you would like a lift, please phone Greg on 0400 492 157.
Meeting place: Meet at the southern end of the
Manly Dam bridge, just inside the main gate, to the right.

Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Beach
Easy to moderate, some stairs and hills involved.
11am - 4pm, Sunday 14 December 2008
Walk to Balmoral via Bradleys Head, Clifton Gardens, Georges Head
and Middle Head. Magnificent scenery and some great history to
explore.
Walk starts promptly at 11am and can be accessed by public or
private transport and you can choose your own finishing time.
Walk will be completely finished by 4pm.
Meeting place: Outside of Taronga Ferry Wharf
Time: 11am
Transport: Best way is ferry from Circular Quay at 10:40am
Bring: Lunch and water
Cost: Free
One of the most picturesque walks around Sydney Harbour takes you from
Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Beach.
Along the way you will pass through national park and a number of
sites of historical interest as well as taking in amazing views of the
Sydney Harbour Bridge and city centre all the way around to the heads.
The walk itself should take you around 2 hours with public transport
available to take you back to the start.
Here is a good map of the walk produced by the Sydney Harbour
Federation Trust.
The recommended itinerary is to start at Taronga Zoo Wharf which can
be reached by bus or ferry. For the best bus route for you consult
the very handy 131500.info website.
The first section winds around Bradleys Head, pass Taylors Bay, and
over to the historic Clifton Gardens and Chowder Bay. This should
take about 1 hour 40 minutes and you can rest here at the cafe and
kiosk.
Highlights on the remainder of the walk to Balmoral include the view
from Georges Head and Middle Head Road, and Balmoral itself.
Once you reach Balmoral you could have something to eat, take a swim
to cool down, or just have a well-deserved rest on the beach.
Then you can either catch the 238 bus back from Raglan St back to
Taronga Wharf or if you have the energy walk the alternative route
back to Clifton Gardens and from there back to Taronga Wharf.
Please RSVP by email godfrey_ken@hotmail.com or phone 0407104810
so I know who to expect.
See you then!!
